Uppslag till examensarbete: Maintenance scheduling optimization

In many situations, for example within the airline industry, there are requirements to perform different types of maintenance activities on a regular basis. The main goal behind these activities is for the equipment to make it from one planned service to the next without any failures occurring. Even though highly determined in terms of maintenance intervals it can be hard to find the optimal time to perform maintenance on each individual equipment.

There are several reasons for this, one being that there can be mixed conditions, perhaps maintenance should be performed every 400 flight hours or every 6 months. Further, there is typically a limited number of maintenance resources available which sets a bound on the number of aircraft that can be down for maintenance. Reaching the limit of a maintenance interval without an available resource means a grounded aircraft which will be very expensive for an airline. The objective of the thesis project is to:

  1. Formulate the maintenance scheduling problem.
  2. Evaluate the performance of different solvers and perhaps different problem formulations.
  3. Estimate the size, in terms of number of equipment (aircraft) and planning periods, that can be considered possible to solve in practice.
  4. Evaluate possible heuristics for obtaining “good solutions” if it turns out that, in general, only too small problems can be considered practically solvable to optimality.
  5. Add the functionality to our existing general analysis framework.
