Västtrafik- Simulating usage of workshops and the future need for facilities
Systecon was assigned the task of simulating usage of the workshops and other facilities that Västtrafik has access to, based on the prediction of increased number of passengers and additional trains. The task included, among other things, how the fleet will be operated, how workshop tracks are occupied, which resources within the workshops are used as well as cleaning of the interior and exterior of the trains, graffiti removal and de-icing.
The background to the assignment was the report Train Usage in 2035 (Målbild Tåg 2035) by the public transportation authorities in Västra Götaland, Sweden, which estimated that the number of train passengers would increase by 300% between 2006 and 2035. To address these needs, Västtrafik—responsible for public transportation in the region—had already decided to purchase additional electric multiple units.
The outcome of the simulation served as a basis for decisions on what types of investments were needed. Västtrafik provided the necessary information for the simulations, which Systecon conducted using its SIMLOX tool. The results of the analysis identified bottlenecks and areas where additional capacity was required. Using this information, Västtrafik ensured that workshops and other facilities would be developed in time to accommodate the projected increase in passenger numbers.
