Västtrafik- Simulating usage of workshops and the future need for facilities

19 March 2017

Systecon has been assigned the task of simulating usage of the workshops and other facilities that Västtrafik has access to, based on the prediction of increased number of passengers and additional trains. The task includes, among other things, how the fleet will be operated, how workshop tracks are occupied, which resources within the workshops are used as well as cleaning of the interior and exterior of the trains, graffiti removal and de-icing.

The background to the assignment is the report Train Usage in 2035 (Målbild Tåg 2035) by the public transportation authorities in Västra Götaland of Sweden, where it is estimated that the number of train passengers will increase by 300% between 2006 and 2035. To handle these needs, Västtrafik, which is responsible for public transportation in the region, has already decided to purchase additional electrical multiple units.

The outcome of the simulation will serve as a basis for decisions on which kind of investments are needed. Västtrafik has provided the necessary information needed for the above simulations, which Systecon will conduct with the help of its tool SIMLOX. The outcome of the analysis will identify bottlenecks and where additional capacity is needed and by using this information, Västtrafik will ensure that workshops and other facilities are developed in time to handle the passenger increase.
